Maris is a complicated person. She travels a huge range of emotion and suffers from rather severe mood swings, able to go from extremely cheerful to pissed off in less than a minute. She's unpredictable, that's a good way to put it. The only thing she likes less than people getting in her way is beastmen in general, but that pretty much goes without saying when it comes to merfolk.
A long time ago, Maris was a cheerful and happy girl, but after her parents' passing, she became very closed off. She still talks to people and she's great at presenting the facade of friendliness, but it's all just a game to her. She doesn't have any close friends, nor does she seem to have the desire to allow people anywhere near her, emotionally. If she can use you for something, then it's likely she'll attempt to make friends with you. Lose your usefulness and she won't have the time of day for you anymore. In truth, she's extremely scared and lonely, but you wouldn't know that just to look at her and she goes out of her way to make sure not to present that side of herself to people.

Maris is an only child and she always liked it that way, thank you very much. Like most young merfolk, she had a natural curiosity for what was above the surface of the water... but she didn't really look into it too closely because it wasn't like she was going to spend much time up there anyway. She did really enjoy, as a child, going up to the beach and making friends with the legged children that she could find up there. Though she frequently was admonished for going alone, she never stopped.
She wasn't there when it happened, but she heard the story of her father being attacked by beastmen up on the beach. They practically destroyed his tail and his ability to swim well with it, and despite his injury, it was a long and agonizing time of taking care of him before he finally died. These memories make up most of Maris's life between the age of eight and fourteen. When he finally did succumb to the health problems that he had acquired in the aftermath of the attack, his mother followed due to a combination of stress and emotional exhaustion.

On the surface, she wasn't much different, but she doesn't permit people close to her emotionally and she goes out of her way to make sure she doesn't owe anyone anything.
