While Amir is strong, hard-working, and courageous, he's also rigid, brash, and likely to get his head knocked off his shoulders one of these days. Diving in without thinking (or with very little thinking) is the way to handle most situations because whoever hits hardest is going to be the one walking away with a victory. Sure, it is an incredibly basic and simple plan, but it works and no one can convince him differently. People who use shields and armor are just asking to be pushed into some water so they can drown.
A lot of things are important to him. His family, his values, his people... and he would gladly give his life to protect them. The life of a warrior comes naturally to him. It isn't all he is or all he knows how to do; it's just what he wants to be. Take that away from him and he's lost his way. He can still beat people in a drinking contest and cut loose to have fun, so don't just consider him a stick in the mud or something. It just might take a bit of prodding to get him to do something he says he doesn't want to do. He might wanna do it! You never know. He just might not know he wants to do it yet.
A lot of things are important to him. His family, his values, his people... and he would gladly give his life to protect them. The life of a warrior comes naturally to him. Honor. Loyalty to family. Upholding tradition. These were things that Amir has been taught since he could barely walk. It has always been expected of him to take over as the chief of beastmen once his father retires, so he has done everything in his power to live up to those expectations. His father has a long way to go before slowing down, though, so he isn't too worried about the responsibility being dropped on his lap any time in the near future.
Leaving Ilusia is not something he has any intention of doing. He's satisfied right where he is, particularly in Volos, and doesn't feel the need to travel and see the world. Let the world deal with problems that come to it; they don't involve him and he doesn't feel like he owes it anything. Sure, he hears things that strike his interest from time to time, but he doesn't want to jump on a horse, put on shining armor, and charge to the rescue. ...unless his younger sister is in danger, then it is a different story entirely.
Family is, as expected, extremely important to him, and he's being pestered by his father to settle down. Having children and being a husband are things that will come in all good time. For now he wants to watch the world as it spins and continue to protect Volos. There is nothing wrong with being patient.
Every week he makes a trip to a graveyard near Volos to pay respects to his mother. She died in an encounter with a merman many years ago, but he knows that the merman suffered a slow, painful death in the end, so her loss is not for nothing.
