The warm sun against her skin was a welcome thing indeed. Kessie inhaled deeply, tilting her head up to the sky and letting the pure light of day wash over her. Rose red eyes slowly slid open, taking in the scene of the shore only a few ways away. No one sat on the beach, despite the beauty of the day. She tilted her head to that thought, gently floated closer to the land, and glanced around again. The last thing she wanted was to get caught before she was ready to. It confused Kessie, though, that no one was out. Did the land-dwellers not take appreciation in their days and take advantage of their nights? The mermaid made a face and looked back at the water instead. She liked a few of the other merfolk, but after spending so much time with the same people, she prayed to the gods that none of them would show up in that time. No, this was her time to wonder about the world above her ocean home and possibly talk to others that weren't like her. ... But there wasn't anyone there. Kessie slid up onto a rock, eyes narrowing in confusion. "Weird..." She muttered, wringing out her hair. Shrugging, she guessed it wasn't so bad. She got a little time by herself. But, hmm, what to do? "Liar, liar~ You're such a great big liar. With the tallest tales that I have ever heard~" Kessie sang, tone mysterious, yet playful. "Fire, fire~ You set my soul on fire. Laughing in the corner as it burns~"★ screw waiting until she has legs

The majority of his hobbies involved staying indoors. The one exception was "long walks." With his desk work being done for now and no need to return to the school building, he decided it was a good time to indulge in that exception. The ideal weather was a perk. It was not his intention to venture onto the sand, only to skirt the edge of it on his way by the shore. However, he heard a note on the wind that caused him to hesitate. No, it was not the wind: once the gust passed, it was clearly a voice. His attention caught, he was able to see the blatant pink farther up the beach. Was that a tail, or was it a skirt? It was hard to tell at this distance. Curious in spite of himself, he casually veered his path onto the sand. A few yards were enough to tentatively answer his question. Mefose, he remembered, for whatever reason. ★ legs are for squares. like pants.

Her singing didn't pause until she caught the sound of approaching steps. Above the water, everything seemed clearer, from her voice to her sight to her hearing. As much as she loved the water, it turned into such a hindrance that she felt like she was always missing out on aspects that should have always been open to her. Even as her singing radiated smoothly through the air, she could still hear everything else around her like it was all embedded into her ears. Her rose red eyes trailed over to the noise, her song still ringing through the day. At the sight of the man, she decided to wrap up her song with a last minor note. It took her a few moments to break away from the trance that she had set up for even herself. As fast as lighting a candle, though, all seriousness washed away to be replaced by a bright smile. "Hiya sailor! A calm day we're having!" Kessie called out to him, waving widely. There was nothing in merpeople code about outwardly inviting a chat with a human. Or... At least it looked like a human. No ears, no pointed ears, and no other pretty colors to suggest a faerie. Yeah, it would be safe. Well, really, any of those would be safe in her mind, disregarding any race issues. "Anyone ever tell you that you got long hair, sir? I mean, you got a definite wise-vibe with it, but I was just curious is all! Well, I guess it's not as long as mine, but, you know!" Kessie laughed brightly. ★ pants are for squares. go naked.

When the end of her song blinked him out of a minor trance, it was officially too late to walk away. The eye contact was the first straw and the verbal communication was the second. Trying a smile, he closed the distance between them to a conversational length. "No, I imagine yours is a bit longer," he said. Unbraided, it reached his waist, and her pink locks appeared longer than that at a glance. "I am not a sailor, however. I am a schoolteacher." She was the first mermaid he ever met. He read about them, but that was hardly enough information. He caught himself looking at her tail again and quickly returned his attention to her face. How rude of me, he thought, and tried not to fidget. ★ they're both certain of what the other is this time lol

She shook her head wildly, strands of wet hair sticking to the skin it hit. "Oh no, I didn't think you were a sailor. I was just addressing you as such. No, you don't look quite as... um... sailor-y, to be a sailor. I mean that as a compliment too," Kessie laughed, eyes shining with joy at her own comment. It was the truth, though. Glancing over the teacher, it was quite clear that he was probably not one to get out much into the outdoors. That was all fine and dandy, but that begged the question of what he was doing out there right then. If he was a scholar, then perhaps he was doing research. Or merely taking a walk along the beach. After all, someone needed to enjoy this beautiful weather besides her. Her gaze followed his to see that he was looking at her tail. Shaking her head, Kessie understood immediately what it meant. "Never seen one of us, huh?" She tried not to sound sad as she spoke, bright tone still covering it. Her eyes went back to her own tail, a content smile appearing. "Always liked my tail. We don't have white or black, you know. I felt like I was a little special with the color of it. Like an opal. I wonder, if you have a tail, what color would it be?~"★ mutual knowledge of eachother! good!

Quite lively, this girl. She reminded him of some of the students. Perhaps that was what made it easier to smile now, even as he felt sheepish for his own misunderstanding. The subject was disregarded soon enough, however, and he quickly forgot it. He found it curious that mermaid tails could not be white or black. It was something that he never considered. Now that she mentioned it, "like an opal" was a good way to describe hers. It struck him as poetic. "I certainly do not know," he said, brushing a lock of orange hair away from his face. "Pardon me for asking, but do the colors not run in families?" ★

Kessie made a face, somewhere between thoughtful and puzzled. "Huh. Well, I guess they could be..." She trailed off and glanced at her tail again, fingers trailing over the glistening scales. "My mom has a dark pink tail and my dad has a forest green one, so I'm not quite sure. They look pretty together. I dunno! It's not something that I had paid attention to before! Never occurred to me because of the differences in my family."Or she was adopted, which was a high possibility with how different all of them were. Kessie's hair matched her mother's, but her eyes belonged to no one else. In fact, even her facial features didn't match. Her cheekbones were higher and there weren't dimples whenever she smiled. The fact of the matter was that they weren't similar when seen together. She didn't care. The farther apart they were, the better. "What's it like? Living with legs and all that. Oh well, it's probably like just doing it, huh? Like how swimming is for me? Man, I wish I didn't have to swim anymore. Walking looks like fun. Or more convenient. Everything up here looks convenient. What's on your face?" Kessie pointed to the weird contraption sitting on his nose. "Found them underwater before. Reflected the light a little bit."★ - - -

His hand immediately returned to his face, but he realized before she finished speaking that it was his glasses she was looking at. "Oh. These are my eyeglasses," he said. He slipped them off and held them up. The half-moon lenses glinted in the sunlight. "They improve poor vision. I wear them when I read, but I forgot I was wearing them when I went outside." "As for walking, I suppose it is convenient enough. Those who live on land and cannot walk find many troubles in their lives. I would not say that everything here is convenient, however. That is far too much of a generalization." Generalization was the sort of thing that he warned against when the students were asked to write essays. "Then again, I cannot speak for subaquatic life, in terms of comparison. Is it very far below the surface?" He cast a glance out at the ocean. ★ oops I forgot how to note

"Poor vision! My gosh, if a merperson had poor vision then they would be down faster than anything! We take great pride in being able to see into the murkiest of water and traverse the seas at night! I imagine they would be blind otherwise," Kessie marveled at the thought of that. She couldn't recall any merfolk that had ruined eyes. The closest thing would probably be Atticus, but he was just poor-minded, not poor-sighted. Kessie resisted the urge to ask trying the glasses on just to see how they were above the surface. Instead she thrummed her fingers against the rock she sat upon. Her rosy gaze shifted between the ocean where she called home and the land that she wanted to call home more than anything. She tilted her head from side to side, thinking and humming. Humming and thinking. "Deeper than you can swim safely, but not so deep that we want the water pressure to kill us either. It gets complicated to tell differences underwater, yeah." Her eyes trained back on Aldebaran, "Kessie's the name, by the way! Kessie Fray. I have a much longer name, but you reeeaaally don't want to hear that. No no! Instead, you should tell me your name and hobbies anddd favorite color."★ it's actually quite easy to forget!

So water pressure did affect them, though they were sturdier than the human race. Furthermore, they had keener eyesight. He heard that deep sea creatures that were dragged to the surface, by whatever force, died from the pressure change, so it made sense that the merfolk would not be terribly far down. As for her eyesight, he wondered if the brightness of the surface had any ill effect on her, but then reasoned that her eyes may be sturdier than a human's as well. "My name is Aldebaran Bates." Honestly, he should have introduced himself before asking her questions. He was too caught up in the moment. But, as for the other facts about himself, he was unprepared to give an answer. "Things such as that… My answers are not very interesting, I'm afraid. However, if there are things you want to know about the land up here, I may be of more assistance." ★ "What is your country of origin? When did the flood waters recede? How did…"

Kessie made another face at the teacher, this time more on the disapproving side. If the only thing around her wasn't a rock, she definitely would have thrown something at him for such an answer. "Don't say that you won't be interesting, Aldebaran Bates!" She scolded him lightly before whisking her hand around in a dismissive motion. "After all, I am a mermaid! What might not seem as interesting to you or what you think won't be interesting for that matter, would probably be much more interesting than you think! Especially to me."She cleared her throat. Even with a sterner voice and slight dip in strictness with her words, Kessie managed to keep a very carefree appearance. It was a hard thing to accomplish, but years of creating a good poker face developed into being able to keep any expression she wanted to no matter the tone she took on. Kessie shifted her body so she was facing Aldebaran easier, wincing only slightly as the rock slid uncomfortably across her scales. The rock didn't drag as badly against her skin, dang it! "Now. Where do you come from? And if it's not this place, then please explain all aspects of the other place. And what's your favorite color? Because I actually want to know. Where do teachers teach up here? Why don't we have trees underwater? What is the function of a 'wheelbarrow'? Andddd what is your favorite subject to teach?" She smiled pleasantly, expectantly waiting for every answer. ★ "You are a scholar, are you not? Judging from your diminished physique and large forehead, you can be suited for nothing else!"

Frankly, he was dumbstruck. The last person who spoke to him in such a way was his mother. Furthermore, she was right, and that made him blush slightly, turning his head in a weak attempt to hide it. He regained his composure soon enough and gave her his full attention. That was quite a number of questions, but he might as well start with the first. "I am from a country called Heim. It is far away from here, to the north. There is no beach there, as it rests within the mountains. Well, to say that it rests is not accurate. It is a large city, larger than this town, tenfold." He tilted his head in the direction of Asgard, where the closest building was the inn. "The buildings are very high, some higher than trees, and they crowd together as trees do. The streets are never empty, not even at night, perhaps especially not at night." A distant look came into his eyes, but he blinked it away. "I do not know what your settlements are like. Are there any terms that I must elaborate on before we continue?" ★ "Ke-Kesagashnaga… Hey, you got a nickname?" "Kessie."

Heim. Heim sounded like a ridiculous place to live. It sounded squished and squished meant that people were going to be rude to people all the time there. It didn't make it sound any less interesting to poke around, as she was quite skilled in dealing with those who were of the negative variety. She was also quite skilled at making those negative even more negative with her ability to further annoy those. "Streets. What are streets?" Kessie questioned without hesitation. After all, if he was going to offer up his teacher ways, then he was going to start teaching right off the bat! "And why are the streets so much more busy at night? Are they a night-owl city? Or are things are night funner than they are during the day? Honestly, any time of the day is just fine with me! My sleeping schedule is pretty warped right now, though."Propping an elbow on where a human would normally have a knee, she made another thoughtful face. There was so much that she wanted to ask and she now really wanted to be able to walk as well. Even shifting uncomfortably would seem like an exciting thing. But she hardly ever got uncomfortable, so maybe not exactly that. "If you told someone you talked to a mermaid, would they scold you?" She asked, her tone taking on the most serious it had been that entire time. ★ haha! very clever!

"Streets are the established paths between buildings. Whether they are straight or winding depends on the local architecture. People travel on them, either by walking or in carts." He considered that she might not know what a cart was. "Carts are a bit like small, square boats, drawn by horses. That is, our four-legged draft animals." What a strange way to explain things. "But, in a way, yes, they are more fun at night." A small, rueful smile touched his lips. "Those who work during the day tend to relieve their stress in the dark…" Her serious question shifted his focus, and he took a moment to think before he answered. "I doubt they would. It is more likely that they would hesitate to believe me. Your existence would not be doubted, but rather your appearance on dry land." He was not a beastman, after all. However, he did find some cause to worry. "Is this meeting a risk for you?" ★ it's too much fun lol

Horses, carts, streets... There were so many things that were different than what her world under the water held. Kessie already felt like she had learned all she could in the water that she needed to do besides the obvious secret of getting legs to get on land. Once she figured out how to do that, then she would have so many more opportunities to learn subjects that she actually wanted to. Sometimes she wondered if she wasn't even supposed to be a mermaid in the first place. A bitter smile pulled at her lips, narrowing at Aldebaran, though they seemed to stare right through him. "My race? No, I imagine that they wouldn't care. Of course, they may even claim that I did no such thing-- turn a blind eye." Closing her eyes and chuckling lightly, darkness lying in the undertone, she shook her head. "My parents are the ones who are going to take dishonor from this."Realizing quickly that her mind was going to a darker place, she laid back on the rock and gazed up at the sky. "They want me as far away from the beach, from the humans, from the world, as possible. They told me the next time that I went against their word again that I would not be allowed to use the name Fray. Funny, huh? I might not be allowed to introduce myself as Kessie Fray." She shrugged, her tone changed to uncaring. ★ kessiadrinolae. pretty sure i change a letter in it each time
