This was beginning to sound familiar. Even a girl like this, from under the sea… it was a shame. He slipped his glasses through a gap in his coat buttons and into his breast pocket. "I understand. There was I time when I thought I would no longer be a Bates, either by my father's choice or my own." Knowing that she was going against her parents' wishes, and that he was helping her to do so, troubled him. However, he was torn as to what he should say about it, if anything at all. It was simply none of his business. ★ short post is short, but not without reasons

Understand. Kessie never appreciated that word up until that second. 'Kessie, I'm sorry, I understand your loss'. No they didn't. They could never understand what it felt like to be Kessie Fray. It was like saying they understood why jell-o was the way it was-- did anyone? Or like when the merfolk thought they understood the way humans thought-- they couldn't even understand the way their own kind thought. But it was in that second that Kessie had to stop her normal way of thinking, because something in his tone caught her attention as a hook would a fish. Curious eyes darted over to the man, a new form of respect growing in the back of her mind. Yes, this man did understand. She could see it in his stance and in his voice and in his eyes. "What happened, Al?" Kessie asked, rather calmly. ★ short reply might be short.

That was an awfully personal question. What shook him, however, was her tone of voice. When people asked him about his family, it was in that conversational way, the obligated, but disinterested way. He had quite enough of that back in Heim, and though he rarely mentioned his parents these days, he received much of the same faux interest here. Kessie's intent was different. He almost told her that she was being nosy. Instead, he deflated, sighing quietly and shifting his weight from one foot to the other. "My father and I had a disagreement. Several disagreements. Lifestyle disagreements." He shook his head slightly, aware that he was rambling. "Rather than inherit the future I was born to, I chose to leave. That was my decision." ★ nah it's a good length

"Following a future you were born into, it would be more than interesting to find a future that you made for yourself," Kessie smiled softly, distantly. She already knew how it felt to be born into a life that she didn't want. There was no doubt that she was proud of her tail, but she wanted to what it was like to live without it for a while. A way for her to keep herself in both of the worlds: where she was currently and the one she longed for. "Well, Al, seems like there is much more that we have in common than I thought," Kessie laughed, rather bitterly, though the sound still had a bit of a bounce to it. The timbre of her voice still suggested that she was cheerful, but it seemed oddly out of place. "Do you speak to your father now? I know I wouldn't if that were to happen. And I guess that's what's going to happen in the near future for me. Not that it'll matter, I'm getting out of this water."★ i'm so so sorry!

"My father remains in Heim. Neither of us are inclined to write." A chill crawled up his arms, and he slipped his hands into his coat pockets. It was hard to determine what he felt at the moment. Perhaps it was uneasiness, because he was remembering the other stories he heard about mermaids. No, that was ridiculous. Her laughter was sobering, a lifeline back to reality. Reality, unfortunately, was a place many tried to escape. "When you say you are getting out of the water, to what extent do you mean it?" Technically, she was already out of the water, but he asked the question in all seriousness and with some academic curiosity. ★ 'tis fine!

"Like... You know! Like, getting legs like you guys! Maybe just for a little bit-- I don't really know how it works. I would really like it last a week, you know? Get the full experience?" Kessie sighed softly and looked out over the ocean. Too many years were spent in that water. Definitely too many years. A change was definitely going to have to come... or at least more people should come to the beach so she could talk to them. Seeing the same merpeople everyday was the most boring things in the world. "Sooo, yeah, if you know any way to do something like giving me legs, that would be awesome," She gave him a thumbs up and beam. She didn't expect him to know anything. After all, no one the land had. Same went with the ocean, though, too... ★ bleh. so little muse for kessie lately
