Rufus is a man who has seen and learned a lot during his life, but despite all of the troubles and tears, he has never given up his optimistic outlook on life. Even though he's lived long enough to become another jaded adult, he's still got a childlike naivete, and puts faith in people to keep their word, despite how their reputation might be. He tends to not think too hard about the future and generally lives for the moment. As a person, he's very resilient in that he can smile no matter the circumstance. Depression does not get the better of him for long.
Rufus is not by any means very talkative, but when he does speak it often makes a lot of sense and he is easy for most to identify with. He often jokes around and tries to make light of things that make him distressed. He always does his best to have a giggle now and then. Emotionally, Rufus is very in tune with himself. He doesn't suppress his feelings, and always stands up for what he thinks is right.

Some people might look at the days of his youth and say that Rufus didn't have much of a childhood. By chance, many of his family members died when he was between the ages of five and ten. His father beat him regularly and he didn't have many friends. His family often had nothing to eat in the house and he didn't go very far in school. Yet somehow, he looks back at his childhood and remembers the good days of exploring in the woods and playing knights, sailors, and store with the few friends he did have, and his little sister.
As he got older he didn't experience many more positive things, but he always thought he should follow his heart. He was already poor, so he figured that he had nothing to lose. So when he was old enough, he decided to do the things he wanted to when he was little. First, he ditched his job as a farmer to be a soldier. As he proved himself, he eventually got to be a knight of Ilusia. He learned a lot about combat and picked up a lot of martial techniques defending his home from bandits and outlaws, and he got to see many different places. However, he always had a hunger to see more of the world - he wanted to explore. At age twenty-six, while on duty in the countryside, he and his comrades were called upon to take back a farm that was overrun by bandits. They had stolen all of the farmer's belongings and occupied his property. Moreover, they had set up a toll station on the road. There were many of them, but his squad effectively dispatched the outlaws and returned the farm to its rightful owner. In the midst of battle however, one of the bandits who wielded a large axe sliced Rufus's left arm clean off.
After spending the next few months depressed, feeling as if his life may as well have been over, he overcame his sorrow and with optimism decided to do something else that he wanted to do. He was discharged honorably from service and he decided that he would explore the world like he always wanted. But... How? Before he accepted his discharge, he dwelt on that question a lot. But, a friend of his from his childhood wrote him a letter stating that he was working with a cartographer, exploring the land and making maps more and more accurate. There was his answer, and thus he lived his dream of exploring.
As he got older, and saw and learned so much, he thought it was time to share his experiences with the future generation. At age forty, after fifteen years of exploring, he studied through the rest of what was required, and he became a teacher at the school in Asgard. Nowadays, he often travels to his home village to see his younger sister and his old friends.
