Foolish it what it was. Pure and unadulterated foolishness. Unbridled anger was the only thing that bubbled to the surface of Quincy's face as he swam towards--and heavens he couldn't believe he was actually doing this--the surface. Did those idiots have any idea, any idea at all what they were trying to get themselves into? It was clearly obvious by now that Quincy had heard all the whispers. Surface this, surface that. The merfolk of his generation were so fascinated by the surface. He couldn't understand it.
The surface world was so beautiful and the prospect of two legs was fascinating compared to one fin! All they saw was the glitz and glamour, the distracting attention-catching part of the surface. They didn't look deep enough to know what it was truly like. But Quincy knew, and if they knew too, they wouldn't be so keen to be part of that 'world'. There was nothing good about the surface. Sure the other races might have been cordial and welcoming at first, but there was a lot to be said about posturing. The surface people often fought and warred with each other and almost always stood divided. And the beastmen lived there, which was the worst about it all.
The sea was a perfect place. The merfolk took care and looked after each other and were, for the most part due to where they lived, left alone. Unless, of course, they wandered to the surface. Quincy hesitated just under the water, contemplating whether or not really ascend. So far he hadn't seen any other merfolk, which was either a good sign, or a very bad one. After mulling it over for another minute or so, he slowly stuck his head out of the water. The first thing to greet him was a gentle ocean breeze that made him shiver. The feeling of wind blowing across his skin was so strange he almost dove back under the water.
He held his ground, however, and blinked a few times out of annoyance for the wind and the brightness of the surface sun. Everything was so annoyingly bright up here. Sure, the merfolk were pretty colorful people, but here if felt like the colors were bright simply to annoy him. When his vision adjusted, he took a careful look around to make sure he was alone. When he was sure the coast was clear, Quincy swam and weaved his way across the waters close to the shore, eyes open for any sign of merfolk, cursing under his breath all the while.
After a long time of searching, he came to the conclusion the only merfolk on the surface was himself. It appeared that the surface-wonderers had been full of nothing but hot bubbles and Quincy found himself fuming that he had come to the surface for absolutely nothing. In his rage, with all his focus on the shore, paying attention to the ocean would have been a good idea as well. So when a rogue wave hit him from behind and threw him against the rock bluffs that littered the coast, he sorely wished his attention hadn't been so divided.
After regaining his senses when the water rushed back out to the ocean, he found himself a short distance from the water with--oh for crying out loud. No wonder his fins ached, they had somehow gotten caught in the rocks from his tumble. Fear took a slight hold over him as he cursed and began to try and tug himself free. Though, by the looks of it, he wasn't getting anywhere very fast.
