So. Hungry. Food. Food was necessary. She needed it! Now! But where was the food?! Scrambling up a tree, Ri caught a branch and pulled herself up onto it before reaching down to pull her bootstraps up. A tunic, boots that were at least a size too large for her, and a belt made up the entirety of her outfit. Her fox tail could be seen underneath it and she'd made no attempt to hide the fox ears sticking out of her rather tangled waist-length hair. She made a soft 'huff'ing noise, turning her head this way and that as she looked for either people or something that she'd be able to eat. She opened her mouth, but the only thing that escaped was a low, "Rrr," sound that sounded more like an animalistic growl than any actual articulation of the letters. She scooted along down the branch to get a better view and looked around again, the same growl escaping her parted lips. It was within thirty seconds that she spotted a small bird a short distance away, and with a feral grin, she dropped down to the ground and flopped onto her stomach. With a slow, deliberate army crawl, she began shuffling her way towards the bird, making as little noise as possible to keep from alerting it. Because it was about to be dinner, yes it was. Birds tasted the best when caught with hands. ★ open? c: ★ someone feed her before she hurts herself

The school was right next to the park, practically inside of it, and the fastest way home was to cut through. If he wanted to, he could probably make the walk blindfolded: given the way he set himself on auto-pilot while his mind drifted to places far away, he might as well have put a cloth over his eyes. Thus distracted, it took him a moment to register the anomaly in the terrain. The anomaly was a child, one who had never, to his knowledge, been present in the school building. What on earth…? He slowed to a cautious halt, aware that her current activity did not contain the usual vibes of ridiculous childhood play. Unfortunately, he missed the target of her crawl entirely, only catching sight of it after it saw him first and quickly fluttered away. ★ okay I'll steal this template until further notice because easy ooc notes

So focused was she on the task at hand that she didn't notice the footsteps approaching her. What she did notice, however, was the fact that her dinner was now taking flight and fluttering away. "Leht!" she yelled, scrambling to her feet and running after it a short distance. "Ferair vel!" But, of course, it was of absolutely no use and the thing just kept flying away further and further until it was nothing more than a dark speck against the blue and white sky. Raising her hands to her fluffy ears, she let out a low whine, articulated with a drawn-out, "Rrrrriiiii...!" as her tail twitched back and forth below her tunic. It was only then that she seemed to realize there was someone else there. Someone that had chased her dinner off. In her experience, that meant that she was about to be hunted, but so far, she didn't feel any danger. Slowly turning around, she looked at the Man-without-Ears near her (or maybe he did have ears under his long fur?), taking a couple of shuffling steps back as her own ears laid back flat against her head. If she had to run, she had to, because he was a lot bigger than her. Then again, he might have good food. ...or he might be good food, but she didn't want to risk that because, again, size difference and all. ★ aldebaran bates ★ no the probably-very-diseased dinner what have you done

Oh, he'd made her angry. He hadn't meant to do that. Looking at her now, she seemed as wary as she was irritated, and he had a feeling that she might run away no matter what he said next. That is, if she understood him. Whatever she shouted at the bird sounded like a foreign language, and the odds of her knowing Common was now 50/50. "I apologize. Hindering you is not my intention." Those two items seemed important to mention, and he did so in a careful voice. A brief visual calculation placed her age somewhere in the teen years, though she'd struck him as younger at first. She could easily be considered an adult by Beastman standards. However, her behavior thus far was more animalistic than most. It felt a bit like he was talking to a fox. ★ I have saved you from bird flu and mites

The moment the Man-without-Ears spoke, Ri's own left ear perked up and twitched a couple of times. Her wary expression didn't soften by a great margin, but she did take a very, very tentative, shuffling step towards him. Her hands were held near her hips with her fingers splayed out, the fur on her tail bottle-brushed as though expecting some kind of an attack. But this man, he had a gentle voice. There was something soothing in it that Ri couldn't ignore, the voice of a pack leader or something similar. She tilted her head one way, and then the other, narrowing her eyes a little in consideration. Opening her mouth and drawing in a slow breath, she contemplated her words before she said, "Hikini?" as though he would have any clue as to what that was. A thought struck her and both of her ears perked up as her expression turned hopeful. "Mefose?" she continued, her voice sounding far brighter than it had moments ago. If he was a pack leader type, he would be a good hunter and would know where to find food. He looked well-fed, at least. ★ aldebaran bates ★ bird flu is not tasty seasoning, and yes, these words all have meanings

For a second or two, he attempted to recall if he'd heard any of these words before, just to make sure of himself before he decided that he had no idea what she was saying. Unfortunately, he decided just that, and he showed it by shaking his head slightly. "I'm afraid I don't understand. Can you speak Common?" The way she scrutinized him was off-putting despite her brighter mood. While one hand was occupied by his briefcase, the other resisted the urge to hide in his coat pocket or curl into a fist. Strange child, or rather, perhaps a woman.★ How well known is that language exactly

He didn't understand, and she had no idea what he was saying. But she wanted to be understood! How could she make the Man-without-Ears know what she was talking about? "Mefose... mefose..." she mumbled under her breath with the same inflection as someone attempting to figure out how to get another person to understand a word or concept that they clearly didn't get. After a moment, she raised her hands and cupped them outward from her face, puckering her lips a bit like a fish. She waved her hands a bit like the fins on the side of a fish, because surely that was how fish were here in this place too! She held that for a few seconds before smiling brightly. "Mefose~!" she declared happily. She then pointed to her mouth, making an "Ahn~" sound as she did so. ★ aldebaran bates ★ in adonea, it's highly unlikely anyone but her speaks it.

"Fish. Oh, you'd…" That's right. She'd want to eat fish. He glanced at her ears again, wondering if the fox impression was actually a cat. But what sort of language is that, anyway? Now, his problem was communicating back to her. His expertise was in spoken words, not sign language. He fidgeted while he thought, looking down at his hands, one occupied and one unoccupied. Finally, he shook his head very deliberately and put his free hand up, hoping to look negatory instead of clueless. His success was up to the beholder. "I have no fish. No mefose." ★ mysterious!

"...oh." At least that word was easy enough to understand. Her ears laid back again, though it was more in disappointment than in anger this time. She let out a sigh that was accentuated by the growling that escaped her stomach and she frowned, placing both of her hands on her stomach and muttering under her breath. She quickly took a couple of steps back from the man since he didn't have food and there was the likelihood that she wasn't going to be able to get anything else out of him. Maybe he would attempt to hit her or something, that had happened before when she had gotten too close to humans. Still, he hadn't approached her yet, and that was a good sign. After a moment, she tilted her head to the side and said, "Kebaka..." before trailing off, a frown appearing. No, he wouldn't understand that and she had absolutely no idea how to pantomime "where can I find fish". ★ aldebaran bates ★ she is a bundle of mystery

A discomforted expression broke through the edges on his face, dimly illustrating a moral quandary. He might have walked away if she didn't look like she was homeless. If "homeless" was inaccurate, "underfed" was next in line. Before he knew it, he was calculating the options that would lean in her favor. Taking her to his house was a potentially risky gesture. No amount of good intentions could change the fact that he was a stranger. The market was an option, but even as he thought that, his head turned toward the school building. It was much closer, and the dormitories were prepared enough to feed the ever-fluctuating student body. If giving food to an extra became a problem, he could pay for it out of his own salary. He pointed to the building. "There is food there," he said, perhaps uselessly. Feeling foolish, he tried taking a few steps toward it, looking back at her, and beckoning for her to follow. "Er, mefose," he said with a slight mumble. ★

Ri raised her head to watch Aldebaran, tilting her head to the side at the beckoning. Was he wanting her to follow him? Her ears did perk up at the word 'mefose' and she nodded once before following after him. It was actually less of a walk and really more of a... well, a scamper, leading to her half-skipping and half-hopping behind him. Once they had made it inside the school, she was instantly distracted by her new surroundings. "Rrrrri...~" she chirp-growled, looking around quickly with wide eyes and sniffing the air. There were a lot of people who spent time here! A lot of different people! And she smelled food, too...! Her boots still practically falling off her feet, she began following the scent of the food with the same skip-hop motion down the hall. ★ aldebaran bates ★ don't worry, al, you don't have to be a stranger. you could be the nice man with the food.

When she ran ahead, he feared that he would lose her to the exploration of the building, but as he hurried after her, he realized that she was going straight to the kitchen. Her sense of smell must outrank that of a human. Because of this, he allowed her to lead the way to the kitchen door. The building was small, and the walk was not long. When their destination was in sight, he quickened his pace, not quite jogging to catch up to or get in front of her. "Wait a moment. Wait," he said. He thought it best if he entered first. ★ *waits to see if she waits*

Yes, there was a room that appeared to be devoted to food in this building. That was probably the most genius idea she had seen in her entire life! She sort of wished she'd thought of it, to be honest. If she had access to a room that was just filled with food all the time, she'd... ...well, never leave, probably. She was about to enter the room when she heard a voice behind her. Stopping, she turned to look at the Man-without-Ears, her own ears twitching in curiosity. She had clearly not understood what he had said, but the fact that he had spoken to her and increased his pace had been enough to get her attention. He had been addressing her, right? "Rrrri?"★ aldebaran bates ★ the man made a sound, i will investigate it

Grateful that she'd stopped, he put one hand up to signal "wait here" before he opened the kitchen door. At this time of day, the staff was getting around to preparing dinner for the boarding students. He explained the situation to one of the cooks, who allowed him to take some of the leftovers from that day's lunch. The meat was not fish: it was chicken. With the plate in hand, his thumb holding the fork in place, he returned to the fox girl, hoping to find her where he'd left her. Given her pursuit of the bird earlier, he was sure poultry would be fine. If not, she'd be a fool to turn down a free meal. ★ if I skimmed too much, I can edit
