The last class of the day was always a relief. Having eyes on him for hours at a time was psychologically draining, even if it meant that the students were actually paying attention to his lecture. Indeed, it was his job to bring such stress upon himself: anyone caught sleeping got a ruler smacked on his desktop, and he was an expert at calling on the children who had their minds on something else. Boredom and disrespect were the usual suspects, but not for every case. There was a new student in the crowd who struggled to answer questions in a manner that was more nervous than bleary. That was one among several cues that led him to finally seek her out after class. He was unable to find her in the building before everyone dispersed, but he caught sight of her in the park and approached her there. It was a shame to interrupt someone who was reading, but it couldn't be helped. "Excuse me, Miss Dwyn. May I speak with you for a moment?" he said. ★

The book that rested gingerly in her lap was thick, mainly due to the heavy pages and numerous amounts of pictures intertwined with the story. On the front, pretty script read Folklore and Legend in gold. She had already gotten several different students asking her what she was reading, but she just mumbled something incoherently and each of them took the answer as they deciphered it before going along on their merry way. Flyta was grateful for the privacy that was immediately given as she didn't know what else to tell them. Under her hair, she could feel her ears twitching in annoyance of being held down, but she forced them to stay put, focusing on the noises close to her so they wouldn't move. It was always on a day when she chose to read outside that they wanted to cause a problem. And during spring, she wanted to be out almost all the time, in a feeling of restlessness. Spring was always her favorite time. She knocked off the drowsiness of winter that probably came with her animal side. But it was her animal side that would have alerted her of the approaching footsteps in a heartbeat. As soon as the teacher's words entered her ears, she jolted up, eyes wide with surprise. "A-Ah M-M-Mr.Bates..." She started, snapping her book close and hugging it to her chest. She opened her mouth several times, but words refused to come out. Eventually, Flyta gave a few nods to her teacher. He was a nice man and a great teacher. Every time he called on her in class, though, was like she was being put under a spotlight. And now he needed to talk to her? After class? She was in trouble. She was going to be expelled. "Y-Yes..."★

That was the response he expected. Honestly, it is as if she thinks I am going to attack her. Does she react this way to everybody? Hoping to put her at ease, he offered a calm smile. "It's all right. You aren't in trouble. I was wondering how you were adjusting to this school so far?" Behaviors had roots. Prior to this, he'd spent a little time thinking about what could cause such anxiety. The most obvious factor was her recent move. That was what he had to go on, and the rest depended on what she was willing to tell him. ★

She wasn't in trouble? That was a relief... Having a teacher walk up to you was not the most nerve-wracking experience in the world, but not the worst she had ever happened to her. Running her hands along the spine of her book, she debated on how she wanted to answer his question or even if she wanted to answer truthfully. She knew it was best to keep an honest mind, but she also didn't want to draw attention to herself with her situation. Flyta knew she was doing bad at getting the problems in class and giving a good response for anytime she was called on. The teacher was there to probably make sure she was actually coherent at anytime of the day. Maybe the other kids made her nervous? Maybe he made her nervous? The questions she devised for the man she hardly knew all seemed to peg her down further in self-confidence. "F-Fine... I, um... It's much different than Cen... I was home-schooled in Cen. And there weren't many kids my age. Th-There were a lot adults... But not many I knew could read," Flyta explained softly, hugging the book closer to herself. "I didn't have to worry about keeping up... I-I'm sorry. I really am." By the end, Flyta's voice had dwindled off into a whisper, gold eyes shifting this way and that and anywhere away from Mr.Bates' gaze. ★

That book she held was familiar to him. There was a copy of it on his shelf at home. It was one of the things he brought with him from Heim, even though several years had gone by without him opening the cover. "There's no need to apologize. It is a major adjustment to make, especially when nobody is familiar to you. But, you will adjust, in time, as many already have. Is there any subject in particular that you are having trouble with?" He'd heard that she was from Cen. From what he knew of the country, and from what she just told him, he found her prior education (in particular, her literacy) worth respecting. It was nice to see that her intellectual promise was given the opportunity for cultivation. ★ oh the memories of listening to teachers talk to students like this...

It had been a major adjustment! In fact, when her parents had brought up the idea of sending her by herself to another country, she was horrified. They packed up the meager supplies she had in her room, saw her off at the school dorms, and then left. This wasn't supposed to happen until she was two years older. They were always sending money for food, but the amount they sent was not enough for much-- but it wasn't like she was going to tell them that. The thoughts almost made her start crying all over again. Thankfully, the deep breaths she was taking helped to calm down her emotions before she started bawling in front of the teacher. She already knew how that would go along. Living in Cen taught you that you didn't get sympathy for crying, just weird looks. "I... I'm not good at math. The word problems are easy, but I have a hard time with the other ones..." She admitted with a shade of pink staining her cheeks. "A-And I just get nervous when you call on me in class... I-I know the answers, I swear." ★ there's a star here. i probably should use it

"I'm sure you do. Unfortunately, being able to speak them in class is something you must be able to do," he said. An apologetic note snuck into the end of the statement. He understood shyness, but he could not make an exception for her when he was teaching. "Students usually have more trouble with the word problems," he said diplomatically, partially to himself. "If you want help with the others, I, or any of the teachers would gladly tutor you after hours, either in the classroom or in the library. Have you been to the library yet?" ★ suddenly balverines I mean what

"I understand. Public speaking seems to be a big deal for most jobs..." Flyta murmured in a tone of thoughtfulness, though it was unknown if she even wanted a job that involved speaking in public. She hadn't given it too much thought with the life she had back in Cen. There was only so much that she could do back then. Ilusia, though? No, she hadn't even started fathoming the possibilities that were now opened up to her. Flyta immediately perked up at the mention of a library. Without even thinking about it, Flyta stood up, clutching her book more loosely as she seemed to become more comfortable. "No. I haven't been to the library. I... I-I didn't know there was one," She admitted, though she was okay with that if she could find out where it was. Shifting her weight from one foot to the other, Flyta looked at Aldebaran without tilting her head up. "Y-You... You can show me, right?" ★ yaaay balverines-- wait what?

When she stood, he took a small step back, surprised by her enthusiasm and pleased by her interest in the library. Perhaps it would make her more comfortable with her surroundings. "Of course. It isn't far," he said. The library was visible through the park trees, situated closely to the much younger school building. That may have been a deliberate gesture on the part of those who planned the construction, as it provided an easy reference source for the students. "They say it is not as impressive as the library in Meridell, but it is reliable. Naturally, it contains some books on folklore, as well, if that is an interest of yours?" he said while they walked. ★ this library is totally legit. totally not bull-shitted.
