Introduction to Magic
What is magic? For hundred of years people have tried to define it. It has always been there, yet no one has the best grasp on it. What is known is that it is an intimate relationship between a person and the world around them. Magic isn't in people; it is all around them. Most believe that magic comes from the spirits of nature, though what the spirits of nature are tends to vary from person to person. Some believe it is as simple as the air breathed, water used, fire started, and ground walked on. Others believe that there might be actual people who are a spirit of nature. Since it is nearly impossible to pin down, many devote their entire life to studying it.
Either way, magic allows a person to do extraordinary things. By using this power, a person uses their own energy and can channel it in different ways. Some prefer to use their bare hands and others prefer to use a medium such as a blade, wand, or instrument. Magic isn't something that comes naturally for most, so picking up a spell book and practicing is the best way to get started. Items that have been endowed with magic are not as powerful in the long run, but they are extremely valuable for those who are unable to channel magic well.
Elements and Types
Magic can be broken down into three basic types; offense, support, and natural. Every single spell has an element as well - fire, earth, air, water, lightning, ice, dark, light. Out of the three types, natural magic is the easiest to learn and it is sometimes called 'convenience magic' instead. Light a candle without a match, turn the pages of a book without touching them, open a door from a distance away, move a broom to help clean... that sort of thing.
Offense magic is used most often in combat to attack others. Support magic, or defense magic, can be used in combat to protect people or to help others in general. Healing magic, the hardest magic to cast, falls into this category, making it all the more valuable. Weapon-based magic and musical magic also exists, but people sort them into offense or support.
Magic can be learned by reading a book. Some people claims that going to a place with high levels of magic - or mana, as some prefer - in the air also helps. Some people will undergo a special trial in order to prove themselves to the spirits of nature and accept the blessings bestowed upon them.
The Basics of Casting
An incantation is necessary to cast most spells. Every person who learns to invoke magic is given a rank. As incantations are personal and vary from person to person, unless it is a special spell with a set incantation, the rank of the mage basically shows how long the incantation is, and how skilled the mage is generally with magic. Those at Rank E take much longer to learn a spell compared to someone at Rank B.
Rank E: Thirty word minimum incantation.
Rank D: Twenty five word minimum incantation.
Rank C: Twenty word minimum incantation.
Rank B: Fifteen word minimum incantation.
Rank A: Ten word minimum incantation.
Rank S: Five word minimum incantation.
Natural magic does not require an incantation. Weapon-based magic only requires the name of the spell to be spoken out loud to activate it. Many people do prefer to have a brief incantation to speak before it in order to channel the energy properly.
Determine Your Level
If you create a human, beastman, or merman/mermaid with no role, then you do not have a mage rank and have no spells to start off with.
If you create an elf or a faerie, then you are allowed one spell and have a mage rank of E. If this elf or faerie is over the age of three hundred fifty, an additional spell is allocated and the starting mage rank is C, B, or A.
Some roles come with bonuses as well. You will only find out about this after you have taken a role.
Spells are randomly generated based on what would fit your character. When you earn a new spell, a private message will be sent to you. Personalized trials will be designed when a character has progressed enough with their magic in order to reach a new mage rank.
