In what appeared to be a familiar pattern, a note was left in her room for Adell and Xara to explain that she stepped out for a bit to gather information. Fruitless as things had been so far, she would continue to try discover tidbits about the Ilusia Royal Family. Whether or not there were any survivors, she seriously had her doubts, yet returning to Heim without any solid proof either way would send her mother into an angry tiff that no one needed to experience. For that reason alone she would continue until something came up. Getting out of Asgard for awhile always made things feel a bit better. Satisfied with the fresh air and sounds coming from all around, she tightened the reigns on the horse to slow it down in order to spend a bit of time just soaking everything in. Jade eyes scanned the nearby area to see if anything caught her interest. A stream, some trees, a meadow with wild flowers... there certainly were a lot of beautiful things to find if one took the time to look. Most of it was artificial near where she lived in Heim. There were some snow-capped mountains and hills, but trees, grass, and flowers were not abundant. Instead of stars and the moon to light the night sky, the lights from tall buildings fought to keep the darkness at bay. Those little things were not missed until a person discovered a reason to miss them. Lycoris shook her head slightly, taking a moment to tie the horse near the stream and some plump grass so it could feast. Gathering up her skirts and slipping her shoes off, she took a step into the chilly stream and shivered, though found herself smiling faintly as she did so. It really was a nice day, wasn't it? The ride back to Asgard would take a few hours, so stopping at a nearby village for lunch would be a good idea. For now, just enjoying what she had while she had it suited her fancy. ★ open ★ because open threads are good =w=

It didn't seem that progress was going to come easily to them. In all their time being here, Adell had yet to hear even one thing that suggested the survival of any part of the royal family, and not one whisper of rebellion. No attempts had been made upon Lycoris's life, and the worst he had endured were a couple unfriendly glares. It seemed increasingly doubtful that they were going to find anything, but, short of giving up his commission and making a dishonourable departure from the military, Adell didn't have much of a choice. As such, Adell found his thoughts wandering to other things as he dug his heels into the flanks of the horse he was riding. It had been too long since he had been out riding, and it was good to get out into the countryside, even for a time. But, despite his intent to simply get out and enjoy the ride and the scenery, Adell's thoughts were on other things. Despite coming here to investigate rumours of the Ilusian royal line surviving, they had stumbled across something else entirely. Adell had a grasp of the basics of magic, but his learning was entirely militant, the only spells he knew or cared to know having a purely combative application. It was unusual at best, and, barring some kind of cosmological event, something supernatural was clearly going on. Perhaps that would be the better thing to investigate, instead of chasing after rumours. Or perhaps they should turn to more mundane concerns. There was that festival coming up, and it could be a good opportunity to generate some goodwill with the locals, if Lycoris had any interest in attending. But there was the matter of that tradition of invitation. It seemed unlikely that anyone would have the impropriety to invite royalty in such a manner, and Adell was certainly amongst their number. It still brought to mind what Adell should do regarding that matter. He half-expected Xara to give him some not-so-subtle hints and nudges, but sharing a room with her was taxing enough, without throwing anything that could be regarded as courtship into the mix. Considering what had happened thus far, he found a certain beastwoman figuring into that line of thought. He barely knew her, and understood her less, and yet... Adell shook his head, and took stock of his surroundings. He tugged the reins in response, guiding the steed to a smooth stop. Seeing the princess spending a carefree moment in the stream honestly warmed his heart, and he did not bother trying to suppress his smile. Perhaps this trip would do her some good after all, if for no other reason than getting away from her mother. "Good day, your highness." The formality fell a little flat with the cheer in his voice, but it was given nonetheless. Finding a suitable spot, Adell dismounted, and stood easily. "Have you had a pleasant ride?"★ lycoris ★ stupid power cut means this post was written twice. bleh.

Caught.Feeling like a kid with her hand caught in the cookie jar, Lycoris warred between two possible reactions to the all too familiar voice a short distance behind her. She could easily whirl around and act like she usually did - or, at least, how she usually did in recent years. The death of her father changed her in ways that even a blind man could see. Coupled with her mother's influence, it was a miracle she didn't act like an ice queen. Slightly awkward, uncertain, and curt would always be preferred. The second is what she ended up doing without giving it too much thought. Her form remained relaxed, her eyes giving away the happiness she felt at the moment. Finding joy in small things would always be one of her talents and this place definitely brought forth warm feelings. "I had a very pleasant ride, Adell." Turning back to the stream, she stepped deeper in. The hem of her attire could get a little wet. It wasn't as if it would harm the fabric by having water cling to it. "The inn is becoming more comfortable as time passes, but I find myself wanting to explore the area more and see what is out there. The capital is not exactly known for an abundance of flora and fauna." Seeing butterflies floating by the flowers and squirrels running around near the tree only made things even better. As much as she adored her home country, it was very cold in many ways. Very artificial. Patches of life could be found, true, yet nothing at all like this. Things were just beautiful. "How have you been as of late?" Turning, Lycoris raised her leg to kick some water out at her childhood friend and current bodyguard, her eyes glittering in enjoyment. "We have not had time alone for awhile. It is not something I will take for granted."★ adell windsor ★ eeegh D: I hate when that happens. rewriting posts are really hard ><

A hand was raised in reflex to the splashed water, but Adell was far from annoyed. He wasn't exactly planning to get his boots soaked, but being greeted with a playful splash of water was far preferable to the coolness she had been displaying over the last few years. She could hardly blame her for being cold and withdrawn, and those scars would probably linger for the rest of her life. Whether it was a mere distraction or not, it was both a relief and a small victory to see joy in Lycoris's eyes. Would she withdraw again as soon as they were finished in Ilusia? He supposed that only time would tell. Still, a man could hope. A deep breath was taken. Lycoris was right in everything she just said; while it was certainly different from the capital, that in itself was not a bad thing. "I've been... hm." Adell folded his arms in thought, not sure how much to say. "Our time here certainly has not been as uneventful as I'd feared. Maybe not productive, admittedly, but far from boring." Adell's speech was a bit more relaxed, a direct and inevitable response to Lycoris's more relaxed demeanor. If she decided to chew him out for it, he'd just have to live with it. "A bit concerned with those strange storms recently, but there's naught to be done about that." They were doing a poor job in finding a few people, so taking on the heavens was probably not the next logical step. "There is still much of Ilusia to see, if that is what you are interested in. Other than the fields and small settlements, there are also the mountains and the forest." They brought the other races into the picture, but he hardly thought the beastmen or the elves and faeries would openly attack or show hostility to a Heimite royal, particularly if she did not have a retinue of soldiers at her heels. "This is probably the furthest I've been from Asgard since we've arrived, so it could prove interesting."★ lycoris ★ and then it turns different, and it feels wrong.

The strange storms that happened in Ilusia could not go ignored. During the first one that took place, she found herself in the kitchen with Holly Devanti, daughter of the couple that owned and managed the inn. Her brothers Wynter and Fayt were two people she saw on a regular basis, one more in passing and one more personally, but it was different with her in ways. Something about the other female made her feel less guarded. This was preferable to how naked she felt when around the blonde-haired man who knew her as kin. The second storm that raged was far different since it lead to direct action. When Adell himself could not be found, embarking with Xara was the natural course of action. To the foothills of Fairmist they wandered, ending up encountering a man named Aldebaran along the way. A strange book and torn piece of paper acted as the only clue they had to the entire thing. She wondered exactly what it meant, something she would continue to wander. Without more information to go on, finding out the secrets it might hold would be nearly impossible. "This is the furthest I have been as well. I went towards Fairmist the other day, though I did not reach the paths leading further in. The ocean is somewhere I frequent often. Considering how close Asgard is to the beach, this can be said for most people who live there, I imagine." Smoothing her skirts out, she backtracked onto dry land and moved to sit down on the grass. One hand reached out to pat the place behind her in an open invitation. If she was going to get comfortable, allowing him to do the same was only fair. "There is a festival coming up. I have heard a little about it... so I was thinking it might be nice to go. Putting on a good show might help with easing people. Most who see me are still extremely uncomfortable." Lycoris chewed thoughtfully on her lower lip, feeling the words weighing heavily on her tongue. "It may be a good idea for you and Xara to attend as well. ...is there anyone in town you feel comfortable enough to ask to such a thing? If not, Xara might enjoy the invite..."★ adell windsor ★ yeah, it does ;w; ...and she is not so suitable with her match making attempts

Attending the festival for an attempt at goodwill was a solid idea. Lycoris's other idea, though... Adell took the offered seat regardless, and made himself comfortable. "I'm in favour of attending the festival," Better to coach his thoughts; more relaxed or not, Lycoris was still the princess. "As for inviting Xara..." Adell looked down at the ground, not wanting to misspeak. "W-Well, she is a good friend of mine, but I don't... I don't see her that way, if that makes sense." It would be a dangerous thing to do, because Xara would probably take it relatively seriously. Even if Adell did it out of politeness, or anything else, the amount of awkwardness it would cause would not be worth it. And was anyone not trying to hook him up with Xara? Perhaps they saw some sparks flying that just weren't there. He sighed, and thought. "Well... there could be one person I could invite." He wasn't sure why she came to mind, but she did, regardless. "I don't really know them, though. And I'm not sure what the rules are with courtship or anything here." Still, it was hardly like he had a line of female suitors at his door. If that meant considering commoners, and beastwomen at that, so be it. It was nice, sometimes, being the least son of a lesser noble house. If it wasn't for his somewhat unlikely friendship with Lycoris, it was possible that no-one at all would pay him any mind.Another breath was taken, Adell savouring the fresh air for a moment. It was inevitable that Lycoris would ask questions, so Adell decided to nip that in the bud. "She's a beastwoman. I, er... met, during the first storm." Would she appreciate the invite? Well, there was only one way to find out. ★ lycoris ★ such bad match-making.

For a moment there, she thought Adell said that the female he was talking about was a beastwoman. Surely she misheard that. Why would he associate with one of them? They were a lesser race, far under anything of the under central ones that people often thought of. So why would he make a mistake like that? Simple - because she wasn't hearing wrong and he didn't say it in a way he didn't mean. That was... that... it just... ugh!She couldn't tell whether she felt more irritated or bothered. Irritation came from the fact that he actually had someone he knew well enough to ask to such an event and he didn't tell her sooner, and bothered that he would ask a beastwoman over, say, her. The chances of Adell ever asking her to an event like that were slim to begin with since he did respect boundaries and his place, but if his only alternative was a beastwoman, then why didn't he... ugh, ugh, ugh! Of course, none of that inner turmoil displayed itself on her face. There was a slight dimming of her eyes, true, but not enough to signify internal discord. She leaned back on her arms to stare up at the sky, struggling to select the appropriate words to respond to him. Nothing sounded good enough in her head due to the insulting nature she knew her tone would have. Best to give it some more thought. Only when she was certain she wouldn't come across like a raging bitch did she let out a soft humming sound. "If you have known her since then and get along with her, then you should ask her. It is not like this festival is making some sort of life long commitment." Funny, in some ways. If a person could see the future they would be amused by their own words often too, wouldn't they? "What is she like?" Daring to glance over, she blinked. "This beast of yours?"★ adell windsor ★ guess that makes adell the beauty, huh

Somewhat unfortunately, Adell only really detected animosity with the over-emphasis on the woman's race. Adell raised an eyebrow at that, and paused in thought. He supposed that it was more 'normal' if he were to stick with humans, but it wasn't as though inter-racial marriage was utterly unheard of, the amount of half-elves speaking to that. Hell, even Lycoris herself had mixed heritage, but that wasn't something he was about to bring up. Too much baggage attached to that. Adell had just never thought on it too hard, and he certainly wasn't about to start thinking that the 'purity' of humanity was something that needed desperate protection. If anything, her being Ilusian and a commoner was a greater concern. At any rate, he hadn't given much real thought until now. "As I said, I don't really know her that well." Adell found himself choosing his words carefully again, and the care showed in his tone. "But she's a... an interesting person. Very, well, confident, I guess. This festival could be a good way to get to know her better." Adell shrugged, and shifted his gaze out onto the landscape once again. Romance and women were weak points of his, the only thing he had going for him in that regard was that he had been taught how to behave in a formal setting. Briar didn't exactly coincide with formality, in his experience thus far. That caused a little shifting of weight. Adell couldn't quite put his finger on it, but there was that impression that he wanted to get to know the beastwoman better,. Was there anything wrong with that? "Her name is Briar Desiree." No sense in keeping that much a secret, and Adell's mouth closed, unsure of what else to say. There was that feeling he was treading on thin ice, though he hadn't any idea why. It seemed he suddenly didn't know a lot of things. A sigh was suppressed, and he looked back to Lycoris. He wanted to change the subject, but was unsure of what to say. "Hm... Are you looking forward to the festival, your highness?" It didn't sound right, but it was something. ★ lycoris ★ obviously. what else would he be? aside from a cannibal

Briar Desiree. The name was tucked away in the back of her mind to remember for a later time when she could investigate properly. If Adell had met a girl that he showed interest in enough to potentially invite her to a festival like this, then learning as much as she could about her would be in her best interest. Not to say that Adell would commit himself to her just because he invited her to an outing. No, no, that didn't worry her at all. It moreso worried her that whoever this person was, especially if she was a beastwoman, wasn't good enough for him. It wasn't a rare thing that a noble married into a lesser family. There were a number of reasons for this - love, money, promises of the past, and the like were some of the most common ones. On the other hand, it wasn't common either. ...mm, she was getting way too ahead of herself already. Best to push those thoughts out of mind for later and try to curve the jealousy clawing at her. Whether it was jealousy over Adell going with someone else (possibly!) or the fact Adell knew someone he might want to ask was something she didn't know. "I am looking forward to it. Whether I decide to go or not is unknown still." Going without an escort would make her feel awkward. Admitting to that left a bad taste in her mouth, so she quickly raised one hand dismissively. "Lately I have felt weak. The Memorial Garden is a good ways from Asgard, easily a day's ride or so, and that kind of trip while not feeling up to par might not end well for me. As long as you and Xara attend, I will have plenty of stories to keep me satisfied."It was a valid excuse to back out of it if she needed to. Her health had ups and downs like most people, and she had been sickly as a child quite often. Her constitution just wasn't up to par, unfortunately. It would be a life long battle for her. Eating good food and taking vitamins kept her going for the most part. "Adell..." With a sudden flop, the brunette fell backwards onto the grass so she could stare easily up at the sky, her eyes closing partially and her hair falling around her face. "...what do you think it will be like when we return home?"★ adell windsor ★ hnnng, my turn to rewrite a post ><

Home, huh? Adell wasn't in love with Ilusia, and he certainly didn't relish the feeling of being an outsider, but he wasn't overly keen to return, just yet. Partly because he had a feeling that Lycoris would withdraw back into herself when faced with the queen once more, and that returning home would likely mean that he would find deployment elsewhere. Noble or not, he was still sworn to serve. "It will be the same as we remember it. Tall buildings, crowded streets, and a rapid pace of life to contrast this sleepy existence." Adell didn't see much cause for Heim to change in their absence. It was home, and, charms of Ilusia aside, Adell did miss a fair few number of things about life in Heim. At the same time, it was good to take a break from all the politicking and noise that came with the urban environment. So, for now, it was a welcome reprieve. Given time, he would probably grow annoyed at the sluggish pace of life. Adell leaned back on his hands, shifting his weight so the sword at his hip stopped digging into his side. "It would be good to be back with our countrymen, but Ilusia is not as bad as I feared. Setting aside the animosity we've been displayed from time to time, I believe that this trip is proving to be a good reprieve. Our purpose here aside, of course." It wasn't a holiday, but with the sheer lack of progress or leads, it might as well have been one. Short of interrogating every Ilusian who was alive during the occupation, they really had nothing to go on, and there hadn't been so much as a whisper regarding hopes of the royal line surviving. "I wouldn't be overly surprised, however, if you were waylaid by prospective suitors upon your return. We're not exactly of an unmarriable age any longer." His speech had relaxed again, unconsciously. Adell hoped that his grin, if a little forced, would help some of the tension. "...And my mother and Xara will probably redouble their efforts in that regard for me." Briar aside, there were still expectations upon him, no matter how minor a noble he was. "Could prove to be a stressful return."★ lycoris ★ heim would be better with explosions.

The thought of herself getting married brought much more stress than the thought of Adell getting married. Despite being resigned to the fate that awaited her, one which involved her mother picking her husband and a loveless marriage, she still held glimmers of hope that something might come to change that. What person didn't? It was a perfectly natural thing to feel, to desire, to want... to be loved by someone else and grow old together. Those who were able to find their other half were extremely fortunate. Whoever her mother picked would most likely be someone from the military. A general or a son of one, or possibly even a prince from outside of Adonea. Someone she could easily manipulate to do her bidding. With her mother being human, she would hold the title for awhile longer until all preparations were done. Her education didn't prepare her for how to manage a country yet. She wished it did, but that sort of thing could only truly be learned through experience and practice. One day the full weight of the crown would rest on her shoulders. Whether she sank or swam would remain a mystery until then. "I will be married by the end of the next few years. That is not something I am too concerned about since the arrangements will not fall on me. All I will need to do is bat my eyelashes and act as expected of me. The queen will be the one who decides who is good enough for me. Or, I should say, who is tolerable, as she will never believe anyone is good enough. The best political match is what she will decide." Thinking it and speaking it were two different things. The words felt heavy on her tongue, leaving a nasty aftertaste in their mouth. "Sometimes I find myself wishing we could turn back time. Return to when we were younger and grow up all over again. As impossible as it is, I cannot help imagining what it might be like. Do you think you would turn out the same as you are now if you knew then what you know now?" With Adell leaning back as he was, it was easy to wiggle closer to him. Her head found his lap, resting on his upper thigh, while her hands curled near his knee. She didn't look up at him, but it was clear her full attention lingered with him. "Marriage is one worry... potential war is always another. Heim is far from popular with the rest of Adonea. Ruling it does not mean people love it."★ adell windsor ★ hey, at least aion isn't the one running it, right c:?

That was a depressing thought, on more than a few levels. The feeling of drifting away from his family was bad enough, and losing touch with Lycoris was something he wouldn't want to repeat. There was certainly a chance that, after they were married, and the crown passed to Lycoris, they would only see each other in passing. Particularly if war wound up breaking out. A sad thought, and another reason to wish that youth was eternal. But it wasn't, and, no matter how much you kicked or screamed, life would drag you into tomorrow. Despite all the privileges it brought him, and despite the pride Adell had in his name, he found himself envying the common folk. They may be poor, and lead simple lives, and lack power, but they had a freedom that nobility simply did not have. Was it selfish to simply want to live a life in peace? At the least, Adell didn't find the head resting on his lap uncomfortable. Well, no matter what the future held for them, at least they had these moments now. "There are a few things I would do differently, of course." Everyone had those embarrassing moments they wish they could erase from existence, those small mistakes and misspoken words that caused needless pain. "But I don't have any real regrets. Still, there is a certain allure in returning to simpler days, isn't there? A time before we were burdened with responsibility and expectations of maturity." Adell sounded wistful, and he was. Maybe he didn't have to do it all over, and maybe he wouldn't really change anything if he was even given the opportunity. But that allure still remained. "Marriage may be unavoidable, but I hope that diplomacy wins out. Heim doesn't need another war." It may be odd for a soldier to say that, but something he was told a long time ago still resonated with him. A good soldier was willing and able to fight, but hated war. But would Heim's ambition drive them to invade once more? Or would another nation see fit to check Heim's advances? They were sobering thoughts, and ones he wished were easier to dispel. "But we can't really do anything against war and marriage right now, short of running away to some foreign land." If Lycoris asked it of him, Adell would probably agree. Oaths aside, his loyalty was to Lycoris before the queen and the rest of Heim. "I have a feeling that might not end well, though." Adell hoped that the weak attempt at a joke would help to lighten the mood some, but sometimes melancholic talks like this simply happened. ★ lycoris ★ no aion is good. exploding aion would be better.

The thought of running away occurred to her more often in her younger days than it did now. Back when she was a child, thoughts of running off and traveling the world plagued her thoughts, giving rise to epic adventures in her head. There were so many things she could do and see, and no one would be there to tell her if it was right or wrong. No rules, no prying eyes, no responsibility to one day stifle her. A real dream come true is what it would be. Then... well, then maturity settled in, bringing forth the voice of reason and logic. Damnable voice it was, really, since it made her understand how bad it would be if she did do something like that. She tried to imagine it still, but the thought of throwing everything away bothered her now. For one, there were many luxuries she would have to learn to live without, and that made her internally wince. How could anyone camp outside for an extended period of time? Sleeping in an inn was one thing, but not even having a roof over her head would be enough to get under her skin and bother her extensively. Staying in Ilusia, returning to Heim, getting married, becoming queen, having a child, and living out the rest of her days would be what the future had in store for her. Her thoughts aligned with Adell's to a small degree; while nobility did have power, privilege, and wealth, they lacked the simple freedoms that commoners could relish. When, where, and who they married, what they wanted to do for an occupation, where they wanted to live... some of those things were quite enviable. "You will marry some hoity toity woman that has her hair all curled and bats her eyelashes at you whenever she wants something." Lycoris averted her gaze upwards as she spoke, locking onto his brown eyes with her green. She pursed her lips in an effort to keep her expression schooled, but a tiny smile peeked out. "She will drive you insane. Still, she will give you a son that you will adore, and you will raise him as you were raised. The difference is you will shower him with more affection. You are definitely someone who will be a dotting father and loyal husband, Adell Windsor. Of that I have no doubt."★ adell windsor ★ aion does not approve of exploding, but he is dead here, so hey~

"Well, good to know that my future's all worked out for me." Adell grinned, grateful that the moment of tension had passed. To be honest, the remark, even if it was made in jest, reflected just how well Lycoris understood him. Fatherhood may be something that many young men flinched away from, but Adell looked forward to it. Sure, it would be full of unsure days and stresses he could not foresee, but that did not change matters. The grin faded after a moment, and Adell's expression became thoughtful, and he stared out into the middle distance. "We're really not that young anymore, are we?" Thoughts of marriage and fatherhood were sobering enough, to say nothing of the possibility that, in a few years, Lycoris could very well be a ruling monarch. Hardly the carefree children they once were, idling their time away without cares or worries. Now they had their stations to consider, orders to obey, responsibilities to attend to. Some more than others, true, but even Adell had his crosses to bear. He would never have the weight of a nation on his shoulders, however, so he could only wonder at the life Lycoris had before her. Barring war or something unforeseen, or Adell taking a drastic step to alter his destiny, Lycoris's prediction seemed accurate. Still, though, would that really be such a bad life? And he had not meant to jump to a serious subject. He snapped bacx to focus, and, after a moment, the smile returned. "As for you... well, no matter who you marry, I don't think they'll be much competition for you in being the head of the household." It would be truly dreadful if Lycoris was married off to some chauvinist pig, but Lycoris was too headstrong and stubborn to put up with that. She'd probably set them right in short order, and she would always have a stalwart protector in Adell. Not that she would need it, in all likelihood. "You would probably have them in order within a few weeks." The statements were made in a light tone, Adell still treading somewhat carefully. She was, afterall, still royalty, and any jest had to be carefully measured. Failing that, Adell would simply have to try to avoid insults. ★ Lycoris ★ Explode the corpse. Or eat it. No verbal answer came to the first question Adell asked since it was one of those that didn't require an answer. As much as she hated it, the answer was painfully clear to her and to him, and dwelling on it would just bring both of them down. No, they were no longer that young. The thing he - and she, if she had to be honest - forgot was that they were not that old yet either. They were in the prime of their life right now. Just because the weight of responsibility rested on them did not mean they needed to forget how to enjoy themselves. If they did, it would lead to rather dull and boring lives for both of them. A soft snort could be heard from the brunette resting on Adell's lap. She curled slightly, digging her nails into his knee just a bit to try to send a jolting sensation swiftly through his body. Pain was not the intention with the gesture. "Marrying someone like that would be detrimental to the queen as well. She will want someone she can easily command and put into place, so letting some haughty, mighty noble or royal have my hand would just mean a headache for her as well. She is a smart woman, I would like to think, and will avoid that scenario all together for both of us."It wasn't that Adell was wrong. He was quite right, in fact. She would put someone like that in his place quickly so that he didn't get any ridiculous ideas that he should not have. If she could go her entire life without marriage, she most likely would. The need to produce a heir one day would become more important than her personal whims, so biting the bullet and just doing it would save her some grief later on down the road. "We have yet to find any information about possible survivors of that night." Another sharp shift in conversation came from the princess this time.
